Synopsis

This is where it all started: Netflix's first-ever interactive title, released in June 2017, the proof of concept for the branching technology that would later power Bandersnatch. Puss in Boots is magically trapped inside a storybook whose narrator keeps rewriting his adventure, and the viewer makes roughly a dozen binary choices by remote, controller, or touchscreen, steering the swashbuckling cat through duels, detours, and fourth-wall arguments with the storyteller himself. A DreamWorks Animation spinoff of The Adventures of Puss in Boots voiced by Eric Bauza, it was deliberately aimed at children, who Netflix reasoned would naturally tap and talk at their screens, making them the perfect test audience for choose-your-own-adventure television. Two endings reward different instincts: escape the book without answers, or push deeper and unmask who has really been telling the tale. It was quietly removed in early 2024, nearly a year before Netflix purged its interactive catalog.

How the Branching Works

Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale features 2 distinct endings. At key decision points the film pauses and presents your options, your choice determines which scene plays next, reshaping alliances, outcomes, and the story's resolution. With 23 minutes of total footage spread across these branches, a single viewing reveals only a fraction of what the film contains. Replay to discover hidden subplots, alternate character arcs, and endings that only unlock when you choose differently.
