Treezy Play 1.9: She Calls You

Version 1.9 is live on the App Store and Google Play, and it comes with a new name: Treezy Play: She Calls You.

We did not pick that name in a meeting. We picked it because it is what people already say when they describe this to a friend. Nobody opens with the branching structure or the ending count. They say: your phone rings in the middle of the movie, and it's her.

So the name says that now, and so does everything around it.

The page opens on the call

Our store pages used to walk you through what the app was before showing you the part that matters. That order is backwards. The first thing you see now is an incoming call from Dr. Tiffany Belle, because that is the moment Treezy stops being something you watch and becomes a story that reaches out to you.

Answer and the story changes. Ignore her and it changes anyway. Four branches, twenty-eight endings.

The handoff lands on the beat

The ritual that connects you into The Seminal Works of Dr. Tiffany Belle runs through a technician's kiosk, and the overlay has to come off at one exact moment: when Tiffany, in the film, reaches out and takes your card. A frame early and you see the seam. A frame late and the moment is gone.

Getting that right turned out to be a lesson in humility. The overlay used to come off on a timer, which is fine until you consider that the film has to be fetched and buffered first. On a warm connection the timing looked perfect. On a cold one the overlay lifted while the film was still catching up, and the same code that felt invisible at home felt broken on someone else's network.

In 1.9 the handoff follows the film's own clock instead of a stopwatch. It lands on the beat whether you are on fast WiFi or a tired cell signal, because it is now tied to a real position in the film rather than to how long the app has been waiting.

Let the moment play

When a scene hands you a choice, the moment underneath now keeps playing while you decide, instead of cutting away the instant your options appear. Small change, and it does a lot. Choices should feel like a beat in the scene, not an interruption of it.

Your privacy, plainly

The calls are the heart of Treezy, and calls involve a camera and a microphone, so we hold ourselves to a simple standard: say it plainly, release it instantly.

• The camera prompt tells you exactly what is happening. Characters see you during the calls, and your reactions change the story.
• Your microphone is released the moment a call ends.
• Speech recognition runs on your device.
• Every connection the app makes is secure, and the film itself is delivered over a signed, private channel.
