What Is an Interactive Movie?
An interactive movie is a film in which the viewer makes choices that change how the story unfolds. At decision points the movie branches, and your choice determines which scene plays next, leading to one of several possible endings. Unlike a traditional film, an interactive movie is built as a branching tree of filmed scenes, so a single title holds far more footage than any one viewing reveals.
The format dates back to Kinoautomat at Expo 67 in Montreal, where audiences voted on the story with seat-mounted buttons. It returned with FMV games in the 1980s, reached a mass audience with Netflix's Black Mirror: Bandersnatch in 2018, and continues to grow on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and mobile platforms.
